Private
Medical Insurance
We
are pleased to announce a new service which is available to
all members of Cumbria Constabulary.
AXA
PPP Healthcare is one of the largest and most experienced
medical insurance companies in the UK, with over 65 years
experience in this sector, and more than 3 million members
throughout the UK. They recently won the award for ‘Best
Private Medical Insurance Provider’ at the annual Your
Money Direct awards ceremony for the fourth year running.
The benefits package offered by AXA PPP Healthcare gives full
cover for in-patient/day-patient treatment at a wide range
of private hospitals, plus full nursing at home aftercare.
Included in the package is £1000 per person per year
for consultations, tests and other out-patient treatment,
including physiotherapy. MRI, CT and PET scans are covered
in full, and cancer treatment is also fully covered.
The scheme works on the basis of a moratorium on pre-existing
conditions. That means that new conditions will be covered
in full, and conditions that occurred more than five years
prior to joining the scheme will also be covered in full,
provided that the individual is now clear of that condition.
However, conditions that occurred during the past five years
are subject to a two year moratorium.
The premiums are determined by the age of the member, and
we have obtained specially negotiated group rates that we
consider to be extremely competitive. A table of rates is
also enclosed.
Members can join the scheme as a single person, as a couple,
as a single parent, or as a family. The number of children
to a single parent, or in a family, does not affect the premium,
Children can stay in the scheme until the renewal date after
their 21st birthday, or if they are in full time education,
until the renewal date after their 25th birthday.
We believe that this is an outstanding opportunity for our
members to provide themselves and their families with first
class private healthcare cover, from a highly regarded healthcare
insurer, at extremely competitive rates.

Police
Memorial Garden
Over
the past couple of years, there have been moves nationally
to officially acknowledge the deaths of Police Officers who
have died in service since the formation of policing.
Sir Michael Winner has obtained funding to pay for a magnificent
monument to all fallen officers, which is nearing completion
in London. In October 2004 it was the first National
Memorial Day at St Paul's Cathedral and the sale of lapel
pins throughout the County. The second Memorial Day
service was on October 2nd 2005 and took place in Wales.
All
this got me to think about what was in place within Cumbria
Constabulary to acknowledge the deaths of police officers
in the Cumbria Constabulary area. Research showed that,
since 1835, 14 officers had died in the execution of their
duty but there was no formal memorial in their names.
In
Autumn 2004, I approached the Chief Constable with regards
to the provision of a memorial garden at Force Headquarters,
an idea that Mr Baxter was happy to endorse; the walled garden
at the rear of Carleton Hall, overlooking the old putting
green was identified.
HQ
is the appropriate place, as all officers in the force attend
HQ at various stages throughout their service and would be
able to visit the garden and spend time there.
The
garden will be paid for in a number of ways; firstly volunteers
would be sought to help with the tidying of the garden.
A meeting with Newton Rigg College has been held to see if
they are able to assist with design etc. and funding will
come from from the Federation member services.
You
may ask, 'If it is the idea of the Federation and they are
raising money - is it for police officers only?'. The
answer is, quite simply, no. Over the years, a number
of police staff have also lost their lives either carrying
out their duties or at work. The garden would also be
an area for all staff to remember friends and colleagues who
have died both on and off duty.
Below
are the details of the fallen officers who have died on duty.

ill health and injury pension applications and appeals, benefits
and a general welfare issues, are areas that the Federation and
